4th Grade Class Blog Featured on NBC Learn
NBC Learn Subscriber Spotlight: 4th Graders Blog About Current Events
Week of 4/08 Blogging — Watch the video “Malala Back to School for the First Time Since Shooting” in the Current Events section of NBC Learn. How do you think it would feel to return to school after such a tragedy? How would you cope? Please answer ALL questions in complete sentences if you expect to earn full credit! Due 4/12
It happens every week in Turquoise Cannon’s 4th grade class at the Bates Academy, a school for gifted and talented students in Detroit, MI: her 35 students watch a selected Current Events video on NBC Learn, then blog their responses to Mrs. Cannon’s questions and at least one classmate’s response.
“These videos are an excellent way to bring technology into the classroom,” says Cannon, who has been using NBC Learn since the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. Her 9-year-old and 10-year-old students have watched and blogged about news stories on gas prices, the fiscal cliff, sequestration and the Electoral College. “I don’t think we give children enough credit for what they understand,” says Cannon. “The videos on NBC Learn are short enough to hold students’ attention, yet they get the point across. Even I learned a lot about sequestration!
Cannon also asks her students — all of whom are African American — to write a “Reflection” each week on a video she selects from the African American Studies collection on NBC Learn K-12.
Week of 4/08 Reflection — Watch the video within the African-American Studies section on NBC Learn entitled “Field to Factory: A Tribute to the Black Migration.” Reflect on this video. What is meant by the term migration. Please explain why so many Blacks migrated during this time. Do you feel this was a good thing for African-Americans? Why or why not? Please answer ALL questions in complete sentences if you expect to earn full credit!!!!! Due 4/12
“These are important Social Studies stories they relate to,” says Cannon. “And it’s cross-curricular — in the blogs and the Reflections, they’re practicing writing.”

CONGRATS!!!!!!!

Congrats Bates on Being an
Excellent School!
It's a Great day to be a Jaguar!

Dear Detroit Public Schools Family:
Great things are happening at Detroit Public Schools and today's announcement that 12 Detroit Public Schools
have been named to the Excellent Schools Detroit list of the Top 20 K-8 schools in Detroit is just one more
example!
I want to offer my sincere congratulations—and thanks—to these schools for their commitment to providing the children of Detroit with the best education possible.
Our top-ranked schools are:
● Thirkell Elementary School
● Davison Elementary-Middle School
● Burton International Academy
● Chrysler Elementary School
● Garvey Academy
● Pasteur Elementary School
● Vernor Elementary School
● Bates Academy
● Clippert Academy
● Maybury Elementary School
● Charles Wright School
● Dixon Educational Learning Academy
To determine their rankings, Excellent Schools Detroit reviewed this year’s MEAP performance for 126
kindergarten-through-eighth-grade schools, as well as year over year MEAP performance.
It is truly an honor that Detroit Public Schools has 12 of the top 20, and it is a testament to the hard work of
every single staff member, parent and partner in those schools.
Many of these schools offer the range of programs that we plan to offer to schools district-wide as a result of
our new “Neighborhood-Centered, Quality Schools” Strategic Plan, including arts-infused education, early
childhood education, comprehensive community partnerships and excellent customer service to our parents,
students and the community.
As I said when we rolled out our Strategic Plan last week, I truly believe that Detroit Public Schools is at the
most important crossroads in its history, and that we must make necessary and bold changes quickly in order to ensure that this district will not just survive, but thrive. These schools are doing just that for their students and communities. We applaud these 12 schools for their
efforts, and we look forward to even more schools making the top list in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Roy S. Roberts

CONGRATULATIONS BATES FACULTY & STAFF
In 2010, Michigan began recognizing individual school success stories through the “Beating the Odds” initiative. This program recognizes Michigan schools that are finding ways to overcome identifiable risk factors associated with low student achievement, such as economic status, race and ethnicity, or proficiency with the English language. There are two methodologies employed to identify BTO schools. The first compares schools to like schools in terms of geographic setting, demographic makeup of student population, etc. and recognizes those schools outperforming similarly-situated schools. The second uses identifiable risk factors to project an expected level of student achievement and progress and then recognizes those schools that are outpacing their expected levels. A BTO school can be identified using one or both methodologies. Bates Academy has been identified as “Beating the Odds” for the 2011-12 school year.
Designation as a BTO school means your school will be added to the list of Reward Schools for the 2011-12 school year. Reward Schools consist of schools in the top five percent statewide in terms of student proficiency, top five percent in terms of student improvement, or schools that are “Beating the Odds.” The Reward School designation is part of Michigan’s new statewide accountability system authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility request approved by the U.S. Department of Education. More information will be forthcoming about recognition and other opportunities that will be extended to Reward Schools during the current school year.
